My work seeks to bring attention to the beauty of liminal spaces and the mundane in our urban city. I chanced upon this quiet back alley and was captivated by the play of warm and cool lights. The study of mundane spaces and objects is a reminder of the importance of new perspectives and challenges conventional notions of beauty in their formal composition and veneer of ostensible calm. The quiet and absence of human presence in the drawing acknowledge the poignant state of this season of pandemic and panic while still seeking to celebrate the beauty of life in its little moments.
The image was worked from multiple photos taken of the site while trying to remember the emotions I had. I worked mainly in pastel pencils from Stabilo, Faber Castell Pitt, and Derwents. Softer pastels were used towards the end for accents.
